There are numerous treatments available for the treatment of pigmentation: Clear + Brilliant Permea Laser, Cutera LimeLight IPL, Advanced Skin Needling and Chemical Peels, but before you go booking in laser treatments you need to know what kind of pigmentation you are dealing with.

The skin being our largest organ is made up of two main layers, the Epidermis which is the uppermost layer & the Dermis which is the lower layer. Within the Epidermis we all have cells which are called ‘Melanocytes’, which are responsible for giving our skin its predetermined colour. When damaged or over stimulated these Melanocytes can begin to produce excess pigment which can lead to the brown spots we often see appear on our skin and most commonly our faces.

We all know that spending too much time in the sun can lead to freckles and sun spots but what causes Melasma? Melasma is associated with changes in oestrogen& progesterone levels which can often occur when pregnant or on oral contraceptive. When these levels change, the melanocytes become over stimulated causing patches of discoloration. It typically occurs on the face and is symmetrical, with matching marks on both sides of your face.

Brownish colored patches usually appear on the:

• cheeks
• forehead
• bridge of the nose
• chin
• upper lip
